Burning for Long-Term Growth | Saying Goodbye to Billions of Tokens

As the original anonymous forefather of web3 himself showed us with the revolutionary Bitcoin Whitepaper on October 31st, 2008, supply is important in the world of digital currency. Satoshi Nakamoto is still considered the most brilliant creator and foremost innovator in the web3 world, even after more than 15 years of blockchain evolution that has given way to over a thousand different blockchains and tens of thousands of different altcoins. This is because he outlined and described the most important aspects of a successful peer-to-peer digital currency.

For Bitcoin, this is a halving year, meaning that block production rewards for miners will be reduced by half. Technically, this halving occurs every 210,000 blocks. The  April of 2024 halving is the 4th Bitcoin halving, taking place once 840,000 total blocks have been created on the blockchain.

$GALA’s Supply

As a gas and utility token for the rapidly growing GalaChain ecosystem, the $GALA’s supply is regulated in an entirely different way. Still, similar to BTC, the purpose is to ensure long term sustainability of that token and its ecosystems as they grow. Also similar to the Bitcoin blockchain, $GALA utilizes a halving mechanic, but the halving is dynamic based on totalSupply rather than block height. Here’s how it’s written in the recently released Gala Ecosystem Blueprint (Consult that document for more details):

“The maximum total supply cap for $GALA is set at 50 Billion tokens. The daily emission rate of $GALA is dynamically adjusted based on the Circulating Supply. This Circulating Supply is subject to decrease when $GALA is used as gas within the Gala ecosystem or when it’s expended in ecosystem-supportive activities, like purchasing specific NFTs.

The current emission rate of $GALA is determined by a variable daily emission formula, which takes into account the totalSupply of $GALA on the blockchain. An increase in the totalSupply (indicating more $GALA emission than burning) results in a reduced emission rate. Conversely, when certain milestones in totalSupply are achieved, a halving event is triggered automatically.

If the totalSupply dips below a previously reached halving point, the emission rate may increase to align with demand. This interplay between emission rate adjustment and totalSupply reduction establishes a dynamic, responsive supply system. This system not only ensures long-term ecosystem rewards for the Founder’s Nodes, instrumental in supporting the ecosystem, but also imposes a balancing effect on the totalSupply, exerting a downward pressure on the token quantity in circulation.”

The Big Burn

In mid May of 2023, a powerful decision was made by Gala’s leaders. In a massive commitment to community trust, a total of about $620 million in $GALA was burned from company owned wallets, and a new vision was put forward regarding the future supply regulation of the ecosystem token.

You’ll find more information about this event from when it happened in THIS BLOG. Essentially this big $GALA bonfire went alongside a pledge to our community that we’re in this together, and for the long haul. With so many untrustworthy characters in this space who have betrayed their communities’ trust, we couldn’t allow our own beloved community to remain uncertain about our loyalties.

With the yearly $GALA Founder’s reward halving looming on the horizon at the time (according to the previous supply tokenomics of $GALA), we implemented the new dynamic supply-based halving described above just in time for Founder’s Node rewards to increase, rather than decrease.

At the same time, we committed to a new primary purpose for the $GALA token, as the gas token for the ecosystem. GALA is burned from totalSupply whenever it is used as gas on the blockchain.

Keep in mind that we’ve only just begun to onboard external developers to GalaChain, which is finally ready for massive growth. While the projects and products on GalaChain are set to increase in number, the number of Founder’s Nodes (max 50,000) will not increase, and the max supply of $GALA will never increase (max 50B). As you may have noticed, we’ve been busy releasing tools to make it easier than ever for new developers to join our ecosystem and develop their own projects on our versatile L1.

For you earliest adopters, it may seem like a long journey looking back, but we’re here to remind you that this thing is just getting started. Before you know it, we’ll be the first billion user blockchain in the world, and that too will just be a single chapter of the story. Thanks for the part you’re playing in this adventure.

A Huge Piece of The Decentralized Web is Powered by Gala’s Node Network

A Huge Piece of The Decentralized Web is Powered by Gala’s Node Network

You may have recently heard rumors about how Gala Founder’s Nodes constitute a large portion of the decentralized internet and IPFS. It is true that our Founder’s Nodes make up nearly 30% of the most active stable peers in the IPFS Distributed Hash Table (DHT), but that is only the beginning of the story. The Gala Founder’s Node ecosystem, with almost 24,000 DHT servers online, represents a massive contribution to decentralized storage and computing,  powering the largest share of any single network contributing to IPFS today!

In this blog, we’d like to shed some more light on how this fact was realized, involving a coincidental misconfiguration over a year ago that shed light on the actual portion of the decentralized internet that was powered by Gala nodes.

We think that this is an incredibly interesting story about the resilience and security of decentralized networks, and one that is especially relevant today as we prepare to onboard greater numbers than ever before to our sustainable and capable L1 blockchain, GalaChain. But first, let’s talk a little about IPFS and the role that Gala Founder’s Nodes play in supporting the very existence of the decentralized internet protocol known as the InterPlanetary File System.

We want our non-tech-genius followers to understand and appreciate the significance of this story, so we’ll try to keep it simple as we explain. But feel free to check out THIS ARTICLE from Probelab.io for a more in-depth approach with more charts and data.

What is IPFS?

The InterPlanetary File System is a web3 internet protocol that began in 2015, designed to decentralize and democratize ownership of content on the internet.

In simpler terms, it is a solution for the storing and sharing of files, a decentralized answer to cloud-style storage.

Instead of uploading files to specific servers, they’re broken into small chunks and scattered across many computers around the world. Each chunk gets a unique fingerprint called a CID, like a personalized code.

To access a file, all that is needed is its CID. A special network called the DHT (like a giant, decentralized phone book) helps users locate the computers with specific chunks. Finally, the chunks are downloaded from those computers and pieced back together.

The DHT is maintained by nodes from the various peer networks of IPFS, like expert operators who are able to quickly look up and retrieve encrypted data from IPFS. Think of Gala Founder’s Nodes as some of the best information operators in the game, with enough storage capacity and bandwidth to ensure that the most important files are always accessible, anywhere online.

Illuminating Mishap

In January of 2023, a slight misconfiguration of Gala Founder’s Nodes in IPFS’s libp2p resource manager caused Gala Founder’s Nodes to become unresponsive within the IPFS network for a short time. The downtime was only a matter of a couple hours, but the number of unresponsive nodes was so impactful on the total number of network nodes that more research into the issue was warranted by IPFS.

Because they knew (because of the misconfiguration) that the unresponsive Nodes during that time were in fact Gala Founder’s Nodes, IPFS was afforded a rare opportunity for what was essentially a snapshot showing the portion of Gala Founder’s Nodes from the entire pool of DHT server nodes.

Source – Probe Labs

In THIS ARTICLE from the IPFS blog, the unresponsive node mishap (pictured above) was described, along with the solution that was quickly implemented.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this incident was that even with about 60% of its nodes unresponsive, the DHT was still able to deliver content as intended, keeping IPFS running, just a little slower than normal. This is a testament to the power of the decentralized internet, where software can be updated on the fly across multiple distributed node networks without negatively affecting the performance of IPFS.

Uncovering Gala’s Role

Because of the intrinsic encrypted security of decentralized networks, it can be difficult to draw specific information about where support is coming from. However, in this situation, the technicians at Interplanetary Shipyard were able to draw some interesting results from the data. They were even nice enough to share them with us when we asked for a quote in early February of 2024:

“Our latest numbers say that 5321 out of 20093 peers that appeared online the past week (have been online for 80% of time or more), have been Gala peers. That makes for more than 26% of the network. I’m sure there are more Gala peers in the network and that the IPFS network has more peers too, it’s just that these are the most stable ones.” – Yiannis Psaras, IPFS Shipyard

It’s worth noting that we have a lot more than 5321 Nodes running every day. This number is only the most active Nodes in the ecosystem, and it still makes up a MASSIVE portion of the total peers on the network. There are tens of thousands of other nodes running in the Founder’s Node Network as well, showing how much further we could flex together if we needed to.

Thanks to Probelab

We’d like to especially thank Yiannis Psaras (quoted above) and Dennis Trautwein from Probelab, who have assisted us with this data. Probelab is one of the largest contributors to IPFS Shipyard, a collection of open source projects created and maintained by members of the IPFS community.

Probelab is a Benchmarking and Optimization Team “on a mission to measure the performance of Web3.0 network protocols, benchmark protocols against target performance milestones and propose improvements to their core design principles.” (from the Probelab introduction)

These folks are heroes of the decentralized era whose work is always needed but rarely seen. Thank you so much for all your great work in web3’s foundations!

We’re downright proud that our Founder’s Nodes make up such a large portion of the DHT server nodes. Still we may be even prouder that when those Nodes were down, the decentralized internet kept right on going and didn’t miss a beat.

Nice job out there, decentralization pioneers!

The Next Act: Gala Film Roadmap

The Next Act: Gala Film Roadmap

We’ve been working hard here at Gala Film to bring a full-scale launch to you during 2024. Building out the film platform of the future does take some work, so we wanted to touch base with the community about what we have planned throughout the year as we bring Gala Film live piece by piece.

Act 1: March and April, 2024

Within the next two months, we’re planning to bring at least three films picture locked on the platform including our Launch Film which we’re targeting this time period to push live.

By the end of this period, we’re targeting Films and Series being streamable on the platform and hosted by Film Nodes. During this timeframe we also want to get POPCORN distributions online for both Moments and Nodes, incorporate Distribution Boosts and debut unlockable content experiences.

We’re also planning a comprehensive overhaul to film.gala.com during this time, to bring it up to the new standard set by the recent facelifts to the Games and Music platforms.

Act 2: May through June, 2024

During this timeframe we will continue to expand the platform and features in the leadup to a full release. At this time, we’re targeting having an additional six films picture locked, with releases beginning to stream out.

This is the time period when we’ll be targeting the token launch for Gala Film, incorporating bridging and implementing other token utilities to bring Gala Film more into touch with GalaChain and the greater Gala Ecosystem.

This is when users will begin to see more robust User Profiles and a community progression system on the platform as more ways to interact with Gala Film become available.

Act 3: July through End of Year

During the last six months of 2024, we plan to have an additional nine films picture locked, bringing the total on the platform to at least 18. By this time, it is our intention that films will be released regularly, with the community fully aware of the planned release cycle.

Additional token utility and site enhancements will continue to roll out during this phase as we complete the launch cycle of Gala Film.

Building for the Future

It’s important to note that there will still be a ton more coming after this release cycle. This is a very important year for Gala Film, and we want to be as forward as possible about our plans with the community who has supported us.

We plan on putting more information out across the next few months detailing more specifically how Gala Film will work, and what we’re building towards. We’ve always been very active with our community in Discord, but we’ve moved past the beginning of this project where things are moving quickly and evolving continuously. Now that we’re laser focused on our goals, we want to build this into a readily accessible source of information on Gala Film over time.

We’ll still always be very active with our Discord community in addition to creating more documentation and information here – join us in the Gala Film Discord to always keep in the loop on the latest!

Development isn’t always a linear path, so expect some degree of the unexpected along the way. We will continue to pivot to challenges as they arise to provide the best possible experience to our users. We will try, however, to update the community  here should we deviate too wildly from this roadmap over the next year.

Thank you all for being a part of Gala Film. Let’s build the future together.
