Freedom in Web3 Gaming

Freedom in Web3 Gaming

Let’s talk about one of our most important values: Freedom

The decentralized gaming world we’re creating at Gala Games brings you a greater degree of freedom as a gamer than you have ever known. Your ability to list and sell digital assets on the secondary market is massively important, but what we’re working toward goes way beyond just the freedom to sell.

Let’s explore what freedom means to Gala Games, in terms of our mission to empower the gamers of the world. We’re gamers ourselves, and freedom is why we’re building an entire Web3 gaming Ecosystem, instead of just a few games.

Owning vs Not Owning

Let’s say back in the nineties you purchased a cartridge video game, played it for a little while, then got tired of the game. You had a couple options. You could try to trade with a friend for one of their worn-out games. You could put it away in a box for future generations, accepting the fact that you’ll never see that 50–70 bucks again. You could even try your luck at the local pawn shop or second-hand store, where they’d give you pennies on the dollar for what they‘d’ turn right around and sell for 75% of retail as “lightly used.”

Although it’s easy to look back on those days and remember the good times, gamers were a long, long way from truly owning their assets. This is evident in the near impossibility to get any future cash value out of your game “ownership.” Remember that in those days, to “own” a game simply meant that you had the ability to play it whenever you wanted, provided that you had the appropriate console, TV and accessories.

Remember the old dime-a-dozen conversation with schoolmates? “Have you ever played Game X?” they would say.

“Played it? I own it,” you’d reply.

That was never real ownership. In fact, we had the wrong idea of ownership entirely. We never should have assumed that the ability to enjoy a game experience meant that we somehow “owned” that game. Until players could transfer and trade the items from the games (not the games themselves), they could never be truly empowered through ownership.

It’s been a long road to gaming ownership, but now thanks to Web3 tech, the path ahead is much clearer than it was in the cartridge days.

What is Freedom?

We preach a lot about lofty conceptual ideas like freedom and empowerment, but what does it really mean to maximize gamers’ freedom?

Freedom is about readiness. The more freedom you have, the more ready you are to go with the flow, pursue your goals, and achieve your dreams.

Freedom is the thing that allows you to move forward unencumbered, to grow and change. The more freedom you have, the easier growth becomes.

from the Oxford English Dictionary

Gala Games Freedoms

Freedom to Play

The earliest days of video games created a stigma that gaming was a non-value pastime at best, but we are overturning these generational preconceptions at last. People all over the world who were unwilling to give themselves time to play are now realizing that thanks to various incentives and rewards, playtime is back.

Gaming is not just for kids anymore. In fact, it never was. We are playful creatures, and the idea that we are supposed to “grow out” of playing by our teenage years is not only incorrect, but rather heartbreaking.

Freedom to Play Free

The games we are developing at Gala Games are AAA quality, built by some of the most experienced and skilled people in the industry. Still, many of these games will offer players a way to enjoy the game with no purchase obligations. How is this possible? It’s all part of the freedom of Web3.

The more traditional mobile free to play, in-app purchases game model relies on a certain portion of free players enjoying the game to the point of upgrading their experience at their own cost. In a similar fashion, Gala Games can work with top developers to create extremely high quality games with options for free players to enjoy.

Thanks to the early support of those who wish to own in-game items for in-development projects, we can create the highest quality free gaming experiences the world has ever seen.*

*NOTE: Not all Gala Games will always be free to play.

Freedom to Own

By building gaming ecosystems around player ownership of scarce in-game assets, we can level up the freedom of every single member of our community. They are no longer simply players and supporters; they now have the option to become owners.

Being owners in this way does not mean that you literally “own” a portion of the company or the game. It simply means that you own what’s yours, and for the first time ever in video games. You earn it, it’s yours. You buy it, it’s yours. You work hard to upgrade it over dozens of campaigns, it’s yours. We’re pretty proud of this aspect of what we do.

Freedom to Earn Rewards

How are we so confident in our games that we’re able to give you total freedom to own and sell your items on secondary markets? The root of that confidence is in the reward-based gaming economies we create. They are multi-layered webs of gamifications, incentives, and rewards that ensure your decision of whether to keep or list for sale will almost always be a tough one.

There are lots of different perspectives from which you can experience and enjoy the Gala Games Ecosystem, and they come with different levels of potential rewards and unique opportunities.

Freedom to Sell

Finally, the ability to sell your in-game items on peer-to-peer secondary markets lives at the core of the Web3 freedom we hope to provide the gamers of the world.

You’ll find a game that you absolutely love (probably more than one) in the Gala Games Ecosystem. You’ll put your time and energy into following the development progress, honing your skills, and exploring your reward opportunities. You may even decide to purchase in-game property for that game. Once you have taken that leap into ownership, you have leveled up your freedom as a gamer.

You may be able to use your purchased item for in-game advantages or to unlock rewards for playing. In some games, you can even allow free players to use your property (sharing some rewards with you, of course). Most importantly though, you can take your asset to a secondary marketplace like OpenSea and list it for sale whenever you want. The freedom to sell is always yours.

Freedom to sell is freedom from commitment. Let’s say you buy an asset for your favorite Gala Game, then use it for a while to enhance your reward potential. Suppose a few months later a new game shows up that you’ve got to try, and you’re ready for something new. You can list your in-game item on the secondary marketplace, and if it sells, there’s your spending money to make some asset purchases for the new game.*

*NOTE: Gala Games does not predict, control or speculate on secondary market pricing of in-game items. Listing items for sale never guarantees sale.

With Gala Games, you’re absolutely free to game on your terms. We have dozens of AAA quality games in development, and every one of them has all the empowerment and freedom of Web3.

We’re glad you’re here. Stick around. Play a while.

The Importance of Audits

With technology moving as rapidly as Web3, it’s important for smart contracts to be heavily scrutinized by professionals such as the ones we trust at Anchain.AI.

While decentralization plays a huge role in the Web3 future we’re creating together, it also brings its own special risks. Blockchain transactions typically cannot be undone, and they allow users the freedom to move large quantities of assets quickly. Small vulnerabilities in a smart contract may not be discovered for years. Regardless of when they are discovered, even the smallest weakness can be devastating if exploited by a bad actor.

At Gala Games, we understand the importance of security and the risks of developing in the Web3 space, so we take the time and energy necessary to build our smart contracts right. Then, tapping on the experts at Anchain, we confirm the contracts are as secure as possible.

$GALA Contract Audit Report

Anchain.AI

Anchain is an AI-powered cybersecurity company enhancing blockchain security, risk, and compliance strategies. They specialize in thorough reviews and audits of smart contracts, blockchains and cryptocurrencies, serving hundreds of clients worldwide, and securing over $100 Billion in daily transaction volume. Basically, when Anchain puts their stamp of approval on a contract, the industry sees it as an undisputed sign of security and legitimacy.

Said Dr. Victor Fang, CEO & Co-founder of AnChain.AI, of the auditing process, “Since 2018, the AnChain.AI has been relied upon by both traditional financial institutions, leading DeFi projects, and even government regulators to certify the security of some of the world’s highest-traffic smart contracts. Gala Games’ proactive approach to securing their smart contracts and commitment to protecting their users has been evident since our first conversation. Our auditing team’s efforts are made all the more effective by the Gala Games team’s meticulous approach to resolving even the most minor vulnerabilities discovered in the auditing process.”

It’s already been a long and adventurous road for Gala Games, and with over a dozen Web3 games in development, we’re just getting started.

Imagine your own world of gaming, where you have more power and control over your experiences than ever before. Gone are the days when you committed to a small number of games upon which you were left sitting once the enjoyment wore away. Web3 gives you the freedom to play it all, choose what to own, and strategically maximize your rewards. Finally, if the enjoyment ever wears away (unlikely), you can just list your in game assets on the secondary market and start with a whole new game.

We’re building a Web3 home for all gamers, and we’re glad you’re here to share in the adventure with us!

Galaxian Highlights 9 | The Eggcellent Order of the Crush

Galaxian Highlights 9 | The Eggcellent Order of the Crush

Today, we zoom in for a close up on your favorite mad scientist here at Gala Games– Warren!

The world of Web3 entertainment requires masters of many different disciplines working in concert with each other, and Gala Games’ experts are the best in the business at collaborating and creating magical things together. The Web3 frontier is the future of culture and technology, and the brightest minds work hard every day to manifest decentralized dreams in digital reality.

Occasionally logical excellence and brilliant artistic vision coalesce in one superhumanly amazing developer. His unique and multi talented mind is well versed in both the objective and subjective– in fact and fantasy. You’d think such legendary proficiency would make him deifically detached from his fellow humans, but his positivity and refreshingly down to earth attitude is infectious to all he meets.

We’re of course talking about the one, the only… Warren!

What is your role at Gala Games?

Currently, I’m Game/Creative Director for Town Crush. Prior to that I was Art Director on Town Star.

Why did you choose your Galaxian Title?

“Polygonal Pixeleer”. It felt fun and I always liked how Disney called their creative folks “Imagineers” back in the day. That resonated and stuck with me.

What inspired you to do what you do for a living?

I’m not entirely sure I had a choice. I grew up playing video games but from a very young age I was curious about how they were made.

Once we had a computer I could actually type things on, I was hooked for life.

One thing a lot of people don’t know about me is that I’m principally a programmer. I took up art pretty late in my career but my true love is coding. I can happily lose hours at a time tinkering with a piece of low level code, or scripting in a game engine, or anything related to software engineering really.

Favorite book?

It’ll sound trite, but when I think about books that have stuck in my brain and influenced my path in important ways, I have to give it to “The Sword of Shannara” by Terry Brooks. It really kindled my love of fantasy and adventure and I think it’s why I primarily loved RPG games growing up. Ultima, Bard’s Tale, Wizardry … they allowed me to combine gaming, computers, and fantasy all at once.

Today, Warren works alongside many others who are fond of mixing fantasy, gaming and computers.

Favorite part of the Gala Games community?

The answer is … well, the community itself. It’s fun to interact with them on Discord or live at events like Galaverse. Talking to people who are already emotionally invested in what you’re doing is especially satisfying because you can relax and talk about larger plans or longer term vision over trying to sell them on the concept of what you’re creating.

They’re interested in what you’re creating, not WHY you’re creating it.

These are objectively the most important community discussions.

Turtle or Tortoise?

I haven’t eaten enough of either to really say.

What are your favorite games?

I think to answer this fairly, I’d have to give the nod to games that have stuck with me over the years. Games that I don’t mind devoting brain space to, and that I go back to from time to time to rekindle the flame.

Bard’s Tale 3/Ultima 4 — The early games on my Commodore were such wonderful worlds. The hours spent mapping out the dungeons on graph paper, step by step, is a formative memory. Reaching the end of the game with an inch thick stack of well worn paper maps was incredibly satisfying.

Fallout 2 — I forget how I found Fallout now. But once I had, I was hooked. Forever. Being able to putter around that world, leveling up, getting perks, grinding xp, gaining gear, etc. I never actually completed the game but I spent hundreds of hours in that game world, having an amazing time.

Doom 2/Quake 1 — Nothing sparked my interest in a career in game development like those games did. The technology, the graphics, the brutality of the weapons, the … Well, everything. Instant love affair. And when we gained the ability to make our own levels, I dove into that head first. And that, in fact, was what led to my getting started in the games industry — as a contracted level designer.

Favorite music?

I’ve always cast sort of a wide net with music. In high school, not so much. That was heavy metal, all day. But as I got older, I never lost my love of metal but I’ll listen to almost anything these days if it makes my brain happy.

And it varies based on what I’m doing. For example, I’m not someone who can listen to something with lyrics or really dominant sound patterns in it when I’m programming. I need some techno, clubby, background type stuff. Or silence.

But if I’m doing something art related, then it can be anything that gets my blood going. My favorite music is usually Metallica, Slipknot or Slayer. For whatever reason, metal fuels art for me.

Interestingly, over the last few years I’ve gravitated towards SynthWave for both tasks. It satisfies a part of my brain that likes to feel nostalgic but also not sit in the dead quiet of my noise canceling headphones.

Biggest role models?

I have to give the primary nod to John Carmack. Following him through the development of Doom and Quake and the subsequent titles from id Software was life changing. He is the programmer that I wish I could be. I think that’s an important part of having a role model — it needs to be someone who you can aspire to their level but probably never actually reach. John, for me, is a constant source of inspiration.

Cool hobbies and interests?

When I’m not making games for Gala Games, I’m generally doing programming for fun. I like learning new languages, new text editors, and new workflows. It sounds boring but it’s really not. My brain likes to learn. It feels best when it’s forming new pathways and taking on new information.

As an older developer, I also think it’s an important part of staying on top of your game. If you keep doing the same things every day for years on end, you’re going to stagnate in your career and you’re probably harming your brain long term. It wants to learn. Let it.

Warren pictured alongside stagnant brains.

Favorite Food?

Bacon is the easy answer but if I think about it — my wife and I switched to Keto a few months back so my food preferences are in flux. Right now, honestly, it might be avocados. There is nothing that can’t be improved with the addition of avocado.

Please don’t put avocado on that beauty!

Which Spider Tanks Hat best represents you?

I’ll see your question and raise you an “Eggsecutioner Hood” for the chicken tank. It feels so obvious that I can’t believe it doesn’t exist yet, amirite?

Non-artist’s rendition. He’s onto something. Everybody listen to Warren!

What’s the best thing about working at Gala Games?

The freedom. Gala Games excels at allowing people to do what they do best. I’ve been lucky enough to work at 2 companies now that allow people to shift around between roles and departments as they show an interest and an aptitude for it (the other one being Epic Games).

Gala Games promotes the attitude of “ask forgiveness, not permission”. And I love that. They’d rather have you overreach and need to be pulled back a little, rather than trying to get approvals and permissions before trying something.

Which Town Star character could you replace, if only given the opportunity?

I think I’d be a decent express depot driver. It’s mostly downtime combined with the occasional trip to the big city. I’m in. Lots of free time to work on programming projects.

Many thanks to Warren for taking the time away from his Town Crush laboratory to answer some questions. Hopefully everybody in the community has enjoyed a chance to get better acquainted with one of the many experts that makes Gala Games great every single day.

If you think we’re out of brilliant people to brag about, you’re wrong! We’ll be back in a few weeks with another issue of Galaxian Highlights as we continue to take you on a tour of the team that pushes us forward with hard work, ingenuity and unparalleled creativity.
