Letters From the Chainery

Here are the latest updates from the development team working on Gala Games’ blockchain, Project GYRI

Project GYRI is the code name for one of our most prized projects: The creation of a games-first layer 1 blockchain, built for Web3 entertainment.

As Gala Games’ new blockchain moves steadily toward full launch, the team behind it would like to update the community on the latest progress. We hope you can share in the excitement of this moment with us by fully understanding its significance for the future of the Gala Games Ecosystem.

Let’s talk Chain! A lot has happened this year and we’re entering a new era for the chain. In the spring we performed a number of Town Crush test releases with the chain integrated in the backend. May Mayhem launched Project GYRI’s first involvement in a competition and resulted in some tough but necessary learnings. Now, games are queued up to have our chain integrated throughout the rest of the year on a production network!

Town Crush

Warren Marshall’s creation of a fun, lightweight match-3 game coincided perfectly with our need to test out game integration. We were able to try out a number of different types of functionality and contract configurations. We distributed Project GYRI-native Fungible Tokens and NFTs, fulfilled token purchases from the Gala Games platform, and even used Project GYRI tokens as payment in-game on the assets contract. Our Town Crush game contract proved out creating and validating match stats and results, player profile stats for measuring progress, and in-game purchasing of profile inventory items. All in all, it was a great exercise of many Project GYRI features.

Of course, when you’re testing and pushing the limits of what your tech can do, you expect to run into problems. We definitely hit some snags during the May Mayhem competition. Although there wasn’t more traffic than expected, our systems (on test infrastructure) did not hold up to the onslaught of rabid Crushers. Our team was together in-person working on getting things shored up for the competition but ultimately realized that we needed to take a step back. This led to us taking extra time to build out robust analytics and performance testing apparatus and allowed us to diagnose the (quite unexpected) source of the problem. Now we can be much more confident in our infrastructure and better able to quickly find the source of any bottlenecks or other trouble.

Once we felt confident in these upgrades, we were able to re-release the competition in June and reward over 5000 players with over $400,000 in $GALA prizes.

Infrastructure Improvements

Along the way we’ve been continuously improving our infrastructure. During this testing phase the Project GYRI network has been running on docker containers. We now have the ability to run our network in Kubernetes. This aligns with the way workloads are run on Nodes and will pave the way for our network to eventually be hosted on them. It’s a huge step toward our goals of increasing decentralization and getting Node operators involved in running the chain.

Core Functionality

From a bit more technical perspective, we’ve continued to beef up the core functionality. For us this means reviewing and refactoring existing utilities, making sure our code is readable and efficient, and most importantly secure. This is all part of moving from a testing and proving stage to a production-ready phase.

Bridging

A critical part of Project GYRI being ready for production is bridging. It’s important that players can safely and simply move tokens between Project GYRI and other networks. Bridge work is ongoing and will allow players to take tokens from the Ethereum network to Project GYRI and back. It’s no secret that bridges have been targeted and exploited to the detriment of ecosystems and communities so we’re spending a lot of time and effort, getting third party audits and really focusing on making sure bridged assets are safe.

What’s Next?

Of course we’ll continue to improve infrastructure and core features, tightening bolts, greasing wheels and so on. But the really fun part is already in progress — Game Integration. You may have already heard that Spider Tanks has integrated a Project GYRI contract and we’re working closely together to make sure that works great and enables some of the cool features we’ve all been anticipating. Town Crush is going from proof of concept to full blown product so there’ll be work to do to enhance the contract and add features there too. In addition, more games have started the process of designing their integration strategies and I for one can’t wait!

Thanks to the Project GYRI team for offering this extensive progress update to the community. Look for more updates on the chain in future issues of “Letters from the Chainery!”

Benefits of Running a Founder’s Node: Token Rewards

Benefits of Running a Founder’s Node: Token Rewards

Founder’s Node operators whose Nodes were active during the recent Mirandus playtest have now received MTRM.

In the world of Web3 entertainment, innovations are possible thanks to two separate, yet equally important groups: The crypto enthusiasts who think outside the box, and the communities who spread the word. These are their stories.

Recently, there was a Mirandus playtest in which all Exemplar owners could experience the latest developments in the Web3 MMO. Everyone who was able to destroy at least one goblin in that playtest received some Materium (MTRM) as a reward.

The goblin-slaying players weren’t the only ones to receive MTRM rewards.

When Gala Games mints and distributes tokens, a percentage of those tokens is almost always distributed to active Founder’s Node operators as well. Of course there can be exceptions, and the percentage of tokens allocated to Founder’s Node operators can vary.

The Tokens of Gala Games

$GALA

$GALA is the core cryptocurrency of the Gala Games Ecosystem. It is distributed to operators of active Founder’s Nodes on a daily basis, and listed on dozens of crypto exchanges worldwide. Each year, the amount of $GALA distributed to Founder’s Node operators is halved, gradually reducing the amount of new $GALA introduced into the circulating supply.

Reward Tokens

Each Gala Games game also brings its own economy with its own cryptocurrency, such as Town Star’s TOWN, Mirandus’ MTRM and Spider Tanks’ SILK. These tokens are distributed as rewards for Web3 gaming, according to the details of the various reward ecosystems. Whenever these tokens are minted and distributed as rewards, a portion is also distributed to operators of active Founder’s Nodes.

In-Game Items

Many of our in-game items are also blockchain-backed tokens. Similarly to the reward tokens for each individual game, a portion of minted in-game items is always allocated to the operators of active Founder’s Nodes.

Distribution in Action

Yesterday, Materium was distributed to a group of Founder’s Node operators. The following is a broken down explanation of how and why this MTRM distribution took place.

First, Exemplar owners participated in the playtest, slaying goblins to their hearts’ content. Once the playtest ended, the total quantity of MTRM to be distributed was divided among those players who completed the challenge.

Next, the MTRM was distributed to the players, following completion of the playtest.

Finally, all Founder’s Node operators whose Nodes met their activity requirements on the day the playtest MTRM was distributed to players received their portion of MTRM.

In this case, the MTRM allocated for Founder’s Nodes was 20 MTRM per Founder’s Node.

Gala Games Founder’s Nodes

A small number of Gala Games Founder’s Node licenses are still available until the total supply of 50,000 has been reached. Founder’s Nodes live at the core of our decentralized network of Web3 games. By purchasing a license, members of the Gala Games community can contribute computing resources from their home PCs to earn rewards.

Operating a Founder’s Node is like getting your home PC a lifetime job for the Gala Games Ecosystem. You provide the computing resources, and in turn you receive a share of the rewards.

The amount of $GALA distributed to active Founder’s Node operators is reduced by 50% each year (halved). As the $GALA distribution is gradually reduced over time, more and more games will be added to the growing Gala Games platform.

Galaxian Highlights #7 | Curators of the Sacred Tube

Galaxian Highlights #7 | Curators of the Sacred Tube

We’re back with another close up on a leading expert in the Web3 world who specializes in empowering people and cultivating community.

The World of Gala Games has grown so fast that it can sometimes be tough to keep us all together. Our team is often laser focused on crafting the experiences of tomorrow, but there are so many other members of our community on the crest of the wave, spreading the word about Gala Games in an ever expanding tidal force.

Today, we look into a Galaxian who serves as the connective tissue between these creators and the core of our community. He relays resources and tracks down answers, he forges partnerships and relationships, and he leverages his logistical and communication know-how to help empower creators who are fighting the good fight.

Community is all about relationships. We wouldn’t be where we are without our friends, peers and supporters. This week we feature the man who supports those pillars of Gala Games world– Rustin!

What is your role at Gala Games?

Bardificer — Head of Creator Relations

Why did you choose your Galaxian Title?

An Artificer creates powerful abilities with items around them. For me, I see this as supporting those that are educating and pioneering interest for the industry. Without them, many would have no idea the magnitude and importance of what we’re trying to accomplish at Gala Games, and the industry as a whole. While I don’t create the content, I can harness its potential and give others tools to be more impactful. I’m also pretty charismatic in my approach, so Bard felt appropriate. Dual class, it is!

Favorite book?

Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Suuuper boring sounding, I know, but hear me out. This book opened my eyes to practical applications of economics that I haven’t seen eloquently portrayed otherwise. Classes and models and graphs are great at demonstrating principle, but this book translates those models to IRL applications. Basic Economics is my most-recommended book for people trying to understand the “why” behind consumer and market behavior.

Favorite part of the Gala Games community?

What kind of question is this? Easy. Content Creators. I spend the majority of my time and energy working with content creators. They’re expert communicators of vision, and there is simply no other place where you can find such diversity of interest and background.

Creating content is an extremely challenging endeavor and not for the faint of heart. The passion and conviction they exude is contagious, and we wouldn’t be the same without them.

Think twice about meeting your heroes… unless your hero is Rustin. He’s the best.

Internally, the games teams are awe-inspiring. The amount of talent and thought going into each title is intense, and I’ve learned so much about game development from conversations. In the end, people creating games just want to build awesome experiences for people.

It’s easy to look at a game as just another game. But for the people creating them, it’s a representation of years of their heart and soul poured into it. It’s always a humbling moment when you get to learn about the people behind the work of art.

Turtle or Tortoise?

Uhh Blastoise. Or my favorite translation is the French version “Tortank”. Does that answer the question?

Rustin at his induction as an honorary member of The Squirtle Squad

What are your favorite games?

Ghost of Tsushima, No Man’s Sky, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Fallout: New Vegas, and Rocket League to name a few.

File footage from Rustin’s time fighting off Caesar’s Legion in the early 2280s

Favorite music?

I mostly listen to EDM and Hip Hop these days with some metal thrown into the mix. A few artists on repeat are Slow Magic, Excision, Logic, and I See Stars.

Cool hobbies and interests?

Do crypto and video games count? Outside of that, I roast my own coffee and grow bonsai.

Some of Rustin’s bouncing baby bonsai from last year
And a coffee tree, because obviously everything is better with coffee

Proudest gaming moment ever?

Way back in the day, some friends and I played an immense amount of CoD: Modern Warfare 3. There was a 2v2 and a 3v3 mode in which we became exceptionally skilled. We’d run matches and hit multiple MOABs (25 kills without dying) in a night. The maps and our playstyles meshed really well to the point that over a couple of weeks, we won 56 games in a row. We felt unstoppable until that one match which we don’t talk about anymore.

I was much younger back then, it was definitely the peak of my FPS days. Rocked a gold skinned LMG too. Good times. Not into FPS as much these days; My aim is trash now.

👀 I don’t know! Why don’t I know? I feel like I’m seriously missing out now.

Favorite Food?

Sushi, with Indian Cuisine a very, very close second.

Which EoE Faction would you be aligned with?

Arbeiters. C’mon I’m a finance guy, I genuinely enjoy min-maxing economy in games.

Skydiving or spa day?

From these options, spa day. But I’m once again breaking the question and would prefer snorkeling over skydiving. I’m not a fan of heights.

Which Town Star character could you replace, if only given the opportunity?

Express Depot driver. They’re underrated keeping everything running.

Which Exemplar best embodies you?

Human Exemplar: True Provider

I derive immense satisfaction from helping, teaching, and connecting people. There’s something special about having a honed skill set to contribute to the community and help others. A lot of joy in my life has come from the moments I can make someone else’s life a little easier. That moment you discover something you’re really good at, is beneficial to others, and brings you joy. Or being able to provide guidance with tough decisions based on prior experiences.

True Providers are experts in their craft and support the civilization’s infrastructure. They toil and cultivate to provide resources to those who need them. I don’t know, it just embodies the type of person I want to be.

Our sincerest thanks to Rustin for coming along on this continuing journey to show all of you out there in our wonderful community some of the great people that make Gala Games happen — day in and day out. We do have fun sharing these with you, and we certainly hope to share a lot more for you to enjoy.

There are plenty of people still out there that work hard every single day to make our community what it is, and you know we’ll be back to showcase an entirely different expert that you didn’t know is working tirelessly to make Web3 dreams a reality. Look for us next month– same Gala Games place. Same Gala Games time.

Have you still not joined the ultimate Web3 community?

Did you know that when you clap for articles on Medium, they get shown to more new people through the Medium platform? Let’s show the main stream world the power of Web3 and community by clapping 50 times on every single article! Thanks!

Contract Audit Results — Security and Transparency

Contract Audit Results — Security and Transparency

Let’s take a few minutes to call attention to one of the lesser-known milestones of any good Web3 economy: The contract audit.

In the world of Web3 entertainment, innovations are possible thanks to two separate, yet equally important groups: The crypto enthusiasts who think outside the box, and the communities who spread the word. These are their stories.

We take our tokens seriously. To become the global Web3 entertainment leaders of Gala’s destiny, every ecosystem that we build must be objectively sound, secure and sustainable. Before they are launched, new contracts must be checked rigorously for any kind of vulnerability or exploit.

Even though we have a wealth of in-house expertise and experience in blockchain tech, for the crucial contract audit step of the development process, we reach out to third-party experts in that field: Anchain.AI.

Anchain.AI

Anchain is an AI-powered cybersecurity company enhancing blockchain security, risk, and compliance strategies. They specialize in thorough reviews and audits of smart contracts, blockchains and cryptocurrencies, serving hundreds of clients worldwide, and securing over $100 Billion in daily transaction volume. Basically, when Anchain puts their stamp of approval on a contract, the industry sees it as an undisputed sign of security and legitimacy.

Said Dr. Victor Fang, CEO & Co-founder of AnChain.AI, of the auditing process, “Since 2018, the AnChain.AI has been relied upon by both traditional financial institutions, leading DeFi projects, and even government regulators to certify the security of some of the world’s highest-traffic smart contracts. Gala Games’ proactive approach to securing their smart contracts and commitment to protecting their users has been evident since our first conversation. Our auditing team’s efforts are made all the more effective by the Gala Games team’s meticulous approach to resolving even the most minor vulnerabilities discovered in the auditing process.”

More Transparency

As a privately owned company, Gala is under no obligation to share the results of these audits with our community. We hope this can serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency in the world of Web3 we’re building together.

We are thrilled to share these results with our community for the first time. We fully understand that audits, reports and numbers aren’t always as exhilarating as own-your-experience AAA-quality gameplay. Like we always say, we’re a games-first company, but we are building real reward-based ecosystems whose sustainability and success depend on the quality of the contracts on which they’re built. That’s why we rely on Anchain for our third-party contract audits.

Read the Report

If you’re interested in seeing how the blockchain sausage is made, take a look at the downloadable PDF of the contract audit report for Materium through the link below. Materium (MTRM) is the official reward crypto of Gala’s upcoming Web3 MMORPG, Mirandus.

Let’s Talk About It

We’ll be around Discord if you’d like to chat more about the importance of third-party contract audits, or any other topic of your choice. Web3 is our passion, our hobby, our livelihood, and our absolute favorite conversation topic.

If you’re missing out on the Gala Games Discord community, there are friends to be made, there is fascinating research to be done, and there are countless ways to empower yourself to earn rewards in the Web3 world. All you have to do is get involved.

Introducing the Planetary Node Atlas

Introducing the Planetary Node Atlas

The newest addition to the Spider Tanks website’s “Web3” section is the Planetary Node Atlas, with all the current plans for the Planetary Node Ecosystem.

While we won’t spoil the excitement by going over everything in the Node Atlas here, the following teasers should give you an idea of just how unique and special Spider Tanks Planetary Nodes will be.

  • An active Planetary Node operator receives rewards for every single match.
  • Your own Map can be paired with your Planetary Node to increase reward potential.
  • Planetary Nodes can be upgraded to occupy more spaces in the Node Queue.

Planetary Node AMA

Please join members of the Spider Tanks team for a live AMA next Tuesday, August 23rd at 2pm PT, where they will take all your questions from Discord about the Planetary Node Atlas, latest Lite Paper, and more.

Prop Sale

Ok, a lot of awesome games have silly things you can wear on your head, but not a lot of games pack them with gameplay-boosting power-ups the way Spider Tanks does.

This duckling doesn’t need any help crossing the street. Boost your Tank’s Elemental Resistance and Elemental Damage while turning any match into quacking deadly bathtime fun with the Rubber Ducky Prop.
If you get meowed down by cat-astrophic stray fire, don’t take it purrsonally. Quicken your Tank with these Cat Ears and you’ll be feline good. All kitten aside, cat puns are pawsome.

Not only can you wear these sweet little Props proudly into battle or trade them on the market as you see fit, but your opponents will always remember that they got schooled by a Tank wearing a Rubber Ducky, or perhaps a pair of Cat Ears, if that’s more your style. Both items give boosts to important stats like speed and damage.

FOMO alert — Only 2000 of each of these Props will exist.

You’ll find these Props (and more in the future) in the Spider Tanks store.
