The Legal Exemplar Diaries, Episode One: Imitation Websites are not Good Investments

Lately we have come across a few Gala Games imitation websites using our copyrighted images in order to gain referrals for node sales. While it is commonly said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” we cannot allow the bad actors to continue to game the Gale Games Node Referrals system and violate our Terms & Conditions and Copyright rights. For reference purposes, here is an image from one such site:

Fun game: our legal exemplar spotted at least six (6) legal issues with this image, see if you can find them too!

The Consequences of Operating a Site Like the One Above, per our Terms & Conditions, range from suspension of the use of some or all services available in a user’s account to termination of a user’s right to access their account entirely.

We have decided that in the interest of good faith to issue the following warning:

We are giving all individuals who operate sites like the one above twenty-four (24) hours to either:

(a) take their site down

…or…

(b) rebrand their site to stop using Gala Games’ intellectual property/violating the Terms & Conditions.

Following the twenty-four (24) hour notice, we may begin to take the following steps at our own discretion:

(1) issue DMCA takedown letters to the website hosting providers
(2) issue cease and desist letters to the owners of these sites
(3) remove the ability of the owner of the infringing website to receive ANY node referral rewards — YES YOUR REFERRAL LINK DOES LEAD US DIRECTLY TO YOUR ACCOUNT
(4) take any other action that we deem necessary at the time.

We understand that many community members own and operate a number of amazing educational sites, and we do not want to deter those. As such, if you have any questions about a site that you own, please reach out to our Legal Exemplar on discord (JesseHynes#4661) or submit a ticket and we will get back to you ASAP.

We will only remove the ability to receive node referral rewards without first contacting the owner in what we determine are the most egregious of cases.

We encourage people to use our referral program for its intended purposes — which is generating legitimate referrals. Creating fake copies of websites does not help the ecosystem. Making guides, tutorials, summaries, help sites, etc., are great ways to support the Gala Games community, and also gives you a fair place to put your referral link for people to use.

Here are a Few Tips for Community Website Owners:

1. If you want to use a Gala Games image, ask permission, and at the very least provide credit or a cite.

2. Do not create a website that is meant to imitate Gala Games’ website in order to receive referrals.

3. When embedding your referral link into text or a “Call to Action” button, indicate that your referral link is embedded.

4. Do not promote Gala Games store items (whether NFTs or Gala Games Nodes or otherwise) as an investment and/or guarantee return on investment (especially when in conjunction with tip 2). As a reminder, Nodes are not Investments!

5. Be cool! We want to create an ecosystem that will change the gaming industry. Every time that a user decides to try to “earn an extra buck” by engaging in shady activities, you help to provide more examples for why people shouldn’t trust blockchain.

There is a LOT more coming for the Gala Games ecosystem, so make sure to keep in touch, watch the Discord (http://galagames.chat) and get ready for more interesting news! Follow Gala Games on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or in our Discord!

Node Pre-Proposal: Node Rewards for Network Contribution

Node Pre-Proposal: Node Rewards for Network Contribution

The Gala Games Team has been hard at work driving towards ever-greater decentralization of the Gala Games Node Ecosystem. Today, we would like to present a proposal to the community for discussion. This post summarizes the current node reward structure and proposes a change.

TLDR: Below we lay out a potential scenario for node rewards that will better enable the node network to support the whole Gala Games Ecosystem. The more you contribute and the more stable that contribution, the better the rewards.

Legal Exemplar Disclaimer: This proposal has been created to spark discussion in the Gala Games community. Based on the input that Gala Games receives, this may or may not reflect the final proposal presented to the nodes for a consensus vote.

Now, without further delay, node development can best be broken into three “levels”:

Current State (Level 1)

We are still in the early phases of the Gala Node Network, with approximately 55% of the 50,000 total Founder’s Nodes already sold. In these early months, it has been very important to facilitate the growth of the Node Network by encouraging the community to spread the word and bring more people to join us in what we are doing. In this time, the primary function of nodes has been to ensure Node Operators are active and aware of the importance of being involved in the Gala Node Network. This has been accomplished by giving the same 1 point distribution to all Node Operators who keep their nodes online at least 25% of the time.

In this phase, referrals have been enjoying roughly 10% of the amount rewarded to Node Operators.

  • Referral Bonus (one-time per node): 10 points
  • Referral Bonus (recurring per node): 0.1 point
  • Daily Points per Node: 1 point

There have been many concerns raised about the long-term effectiveness of this plan, which is why we believe a phased approach is necessary to reach the full potential of the Gala Node Network.

Next Phase (Level 2)

In the next phase, the Gala Node Network will begin hosting content for the Gala Decentralized Content Delivery Network (Gala DCDN). To facilitate this rollout there will not be strong hardware requirements, but there will be a minimum required.

Rewards will be based on reaching the minimum hardware requirements and scaled by uptime. Additional points will be given for providing stability for the network in the form of static IP addresses with open ports.

The purpose of these changes is to reward node operators for establishing a stable baseline for the Gala Node Network in preparation for Level 3.

  • Level 2 points will be in addition to Level 1 points.
  • Points will be calculated to 1 decimal place and rounded down.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 50 GB Disk Space
  • 4 GB Ram
  • 2 CPU Cores
  • 10 Megabit upload network connection

Points per Node uptime calculation: 10 Points * [Uptime%]

Calculation Examples based on 10 Points * [Uptime%]

Points for stability calculation:

10 Points * [Uptime%] * Max([Qualified Nodes] — Abs([Unique IPs] — [Qualified Nodes]), 0)

Note: Nodes shifting between IPs will affect the stability of the network, so daily unique IPs in excess of the Qualified Node count will cause a reduction of points.

This means that the total number of points possible for a single node that is up for 24 hours and does not have a public IP is 11 points. (1 point for Level 1, 10 points for level 2)

This means that the total number of points possible for a single node that is up for 24 hours and has a publicly available IP is 21 points. (1 point for Level 1, 20 points for level 2)

Dealing with Potential Bad Actors

As the network scales up and provides more important services, it becomes critical for the network to be protected from bad actors. As part of Gala Game’s curator role for the network, Gala Games proposes that Gala Games and its partners (those utilizing the Gala DCDN) will monitor the network for any bad actors who attempt to falsify contributions, availability, performance, or otherwise defraud the network. Gala Games and its partners will also welcome reports of any suspected fraud and will research it accordingly. Ultimately, it will be up to decentralized action by the node network to enforce any penalties. A more detailed “bad actors” proposal will be provided to the nodes before any enforcement actions are taken. It is likely that said proposal will include the punishment of loss of DCDN and/or stability points for a period of time.

Future Phase (Level 3)

Level 3 is still being planned, but the suggested implementation is to have a set of workloads that Node Operators can select to have their node perform work for. Each workload will have:

  • Suggested minimum requirements
  • Performance Criteria
  • Associated reward points

Reward points for a workload will change over time to allow the network to prioritize what is most needed. Each node operator may select which workloads they would like their node(s) to handle. Each workload will “Level Up” to its maximum earnings. This is to prevent nodes from rapidly switching workloads in an attempt to earn the most money which would impact the stability of the network.

Example Workloads:

Urgent Workloads:

In cases where there is an urgent need for a workload to be supported by nodes there will be a limited number of positions opened up where nodes will be able to accept the workload and immediately receive full points.

Flare Friday; Cooperation, Anticipation and Development

Flare Friday; Cooperation, Anticipation and Development

It has been over four months since Gala Games first announced the beginnings of its partnership with the Flare Network in this post. Not long after that, the first of our Flare Friday posts described in greater detail the ways in which the Flare Network as an alternate base layer could help the Gala Games ecosystem overcome obstacles of NFT minting on Ethereum. Then in April it was announced in this post that Gala Games would be contributing to the upcoming Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO) and rewarding the operators of certain randomly selected Gala nodes with additional Spark ($FLR) tokens. And most recently as an exciting development cementing a strong partnership that will grow for many years, it was announced that the prestigious Citadel of the Moon was being purchased by none other than The Flare Network.

The team at Flare has been working hard preparing for their mainnet launch loosely scheduled for the end of July, at which point $FLR distributions will begin. Gala Games is looking forward to this launch with great anticipation, as it will almost immediately allow new options and alternatives to our ecosystem. The company has also been successfully raising funds and gaining worldwide attention. Earlier this week, Flare announced completion of a funding round in which over $11 million was raised from backing firms such as Kenetic Capital, Coinfund and Digital Currency Group, as well as well-known individual investors including Litecoin founder Charlie Lee.

The Flare Network and Gala Games share many of the same core values, like empowering consumers and decentralizing companies to create greater ecosystems than ever before. Flare sees Gala Games as a perfect example of this mission because of the way the company’s focus begins with its most valuable assets: The players. By empowering players through NFTs and blockchain-backed asset ownership, Gala Games is able to perfectly demonstrate the mission of the Flare Network while allowing Flare to help us accomplish our own mission.

Gala Games: The Dawn of Gaming on Flare

Update on FTSO

Behind the scenes, the Gala Games team has recently been given access to the Time Series Oracle repository so they can begin the process of implementing them into Gala Games nodes.

The Citadel of the Moon

With the announcement of Flare’s purchase of the Citadel of the Moon, it was also mentioned the option will be added to mint GALA to the Flare Network, not as a replacement to the ERC-20 token, but as an alternative choice for all players in the ecosystem. In time, a bridge which will allow players to move their ERC-20 GALA into the Flare ecosystem. Utilizing Flare’s F-asset system in order to mint F-GALA as a much faster and cheaper (gas) alternative choice for all players in the ecosystem would be an excellent alternative to the more traditional Ethereum-backed tokens currently available.

Future Mirandus players will want to pay special attention to upcoming Flare announcements, especially those involving the Citadel of the Moon. Players who hold Flare-based NFTs will in some cases be entitled to special buffs and bonuses when dealing with Flare’s own Citadel of the Moon in the Mirandus game!

What Will Flare Do for Gala Games?

The Flare Network will provide an alternate method of minting NFTs that will allow members of the Gala Games ecosystem to transact without being subject to high and always fluctuating gas fees. NFT assets will be able to be minted directly to Flare, or transferred easily to Flare after they have been minted. Everything will basically work the same, but on the Flare Network, the costs of minting, transferring and transacting will be only a small fraction of those on Ethereum.

Basically, the Flare Network has created a perfect base layer solution for us as Gala Games looks to a future that contains dozens (or more) different games and countless NFT in-game assets.

Upcoming AMA with Flare CEO Hugo Philion

If you have questions about any aspects of this partnership, you’ll have a chance to pick the brains of two great leaders at an upcoming AMA streamed through the Gala Games video channels. Hugo Philion, CEO of Flare Networks, and Gala Games CMO Jason “Bitbender” Brink will spend plenty of time chatting about possibilities and answering questions from the communities of both Gala Games and the Flare Network. You won’t want to miss this valuable opportunity to get an inside look at one of the greatest partnerships in gaming. Date and time of the AMA session is TBD, so stay tuned for updates and check the Gala Games Discord regularly.

We encourage our entire ecosystem to follow and learn about the Flare Network, a company that has not only become a partner of Gala Games, but a company that is doing some of the most innovative and incredible things in blockchain today. Like Prometheus of ancient Greece, they have stolen fire from the gods, and through the power of decentralization, they are sharing it to empower the whole world.

May Mayhem: Week 3 Winner’s Ladder

We are happy to announce the winners for week 3 of May Mayhem!

The way that this leaderboard was constructed, the first step was to capture those who were fighting to be at specific “flagpole” positions on the scoreboard. Once these names were isolated and locked in, the entire game was audited to make sure that there were no discrepancies or violation of the rules, after which point those names were removed, and everyone else was moved up in the rankings. This allowed quite a few people to break over tiers, earning higher prizes than they would have otherwise. If you are one of these people, congrats!

Note: In the second list, the “Flagpole” winners are REMOVED and those spots just become normal tier numbers except in situation in which the leading position was found to be in violation and was removed, allowing their spot to go to the next person down.

Mirandus Exemplars: The Fourth Revealing

Mirandus Exemplars: The Fourth Revealing

The first three releases into the exemplars and the first tiers have sold out very quickly! Today, we are happy to release the fourth batch of exemplars to the node network, after which they will be put on sale in the store.

As a reminder, USD prices for anything in the crypto-sphere are approximate, so when something goes on sale it may be slightly more or less than you expect, if you have heard a specific price quoted in USD.

The Alchemists— human

The art of potion making is never an instinctive skill, but one that must be learned through years of education and experimentation. Mastery of it requires nearly limitless patience and a pure understanding of all elements that make up the world around us. Many agree that the greatest creators of potions are members of the elite human guild known as the Alchemists. Their knowledge is so vast that they can craft the most valued potions and most delicate elixirs from local ingredients no matter their location in the world. Alchemists are good to know, for through their potions they can sometimes help you with impossible tasks. But be warned: They are strikingly aware of their skills and usually carry heavy egos. As Exemplars, Alchemists receive a bonus to potion making and are the type of person you want in your group if you plan on exploring some of the more dangerous reaches of Mirandus.

The Goldsmiths— human

The world of Mirandus is an incredibly abundant place, full of precious metals, valuable resources and priceless jewels and gems. An exemplar guild of humans called Goldsmiths has spent many generations perfecting the crafts of working with precious metals, particularly gold. These metals seem to come to life under the agile fingertips and quality tools of the Goldsmiths. No matter where they roam in the world, a Goldsmith is always able to find work, crafting gold and silver into exquisitely beautiful jewelry. As Exemplars, Goldsmiths receive a bonus to jewelry production, which makes them some of the most prized artisans throughout the land.

The Ironshapers — dwarf

Although their population is heavily concentrated in caves, not all dwarves live in the depths of the planet. Some have mingled with the many societies of the world for generations, keeping shops, working trades and providing various services to the people of Mirandus. One such dwarven clan is known as the Iron Shapers. Members of this elite clan possess some of the greatest blacksmithing skills in the land, and they dedicate their entire lives to maintaining that superiority. The unconventional method by which they raise their children is called the Way of the Hammer. It crafts the ways in which young Iron Shapers see the world, ever focusing on the tools of their trade. The greatest celebration in an Iron Shaper’s life comes suddenly when their first successful hammer strike is made. From all over, Iron Shapers bring gifts to their newest brother or sister, and that day becomes known as their Hammer Day. Unfortunately, many of Iron Shapers were too young to fully remember or understand the significance of their Hammer Day. As Exemplars, Iron Shapers possess a trait called Way of the Anvil, which grants them a bonus of reduced energy costs when blacksmithing and allows them to produce high quality weapons and iron implements.

Orcs of Certainty — orc

Orcs are creatures of instinct. They are highly intelligent, strong and dangerous in the wild. Because they are able to reason and make difficult choices in the same way as humans, some say that their natural traits give them a distinct advantage. Some tribes of orcs have even learned to amplify their strongest instincts, giving them a definite edge in hunting, survival and combat. The Orcs of Certainty are one such tribe. They have embraced a sense that is entirely beyond the comprehension of humans that allows them to perceive aggression and fear in those around them. These orcs are nearly impossible to doublecross, for they almost always see it coming. As Exemplars, Orcs of Certainty have a trait called Trace of Danger, that grants them the ability to sense aggressive creatures and the malice and avarice of those guarding treasure troves.

The Mumsend— halfling

Deep in the hills of halfling country there is a small village called Mumsend, sometimes referred to as the quiet village. It is a close-knit community whose residents are made up primarily of the clan known as the Mumsends. These halflings are generally wise observers of their surroundings who speak only rarely. One peculiar result of this strongly held silence through the generations has been the special skill to move silently. In other words, the Mumsends are experts in the art of sneaking up. In fact within their village, society is built around those who are the most skilled not only at sneaking up on others, but resisting being sneaked upon themselves. The game that determines public rank among Mumsend is called Whisper, and as silly as it may seem, the game’s results are binding throughout the town. Whisper has a complex set of rules, but in summary it is a sneak assassin game in which Mumsends attempt to sneak up on their friends and neighbors and scare them out of their minds with a whispered greeting. Those who elicit the most startles earn the greatest measures of respect from the community. For many Mumsends, the game has proven life-changing, for better or worse. As Exemplars, Mumsends possess a trait called Stilled Passage, which allows them to move in almost complete silence. This can allow them to sneak into areas filled with dangerous creatures or to pick pockets, making it just a bit easier for them to line their purses.

Allsight Elves

Very little is known about the most mysterious and oldest of the Elven ancestries, the Allsight Elves. Their relationship with magic cannot easily be explained to other Elves, let alone to humans, orcs, halflings or dwarves. Some of the oldest stories in the land hail these Elves as the stewards of time, without whom the people of the world would have perished on many occasions throughout history. It is believed that they exist across all time. If this is true, it has given them a unique and advantageous understanding of not only the past, but the future as well. Greatly enhanced sight allows the Allsights special mastery over projectile weaponry. As Exemplars, Allsight Elves receive a bonus to all ranged weapons. However, possibly more importantly, Allsight Elves also have a bonus towards chance encounters that range from opportunities for great fortune to those which grant them the best advantage in combat.
