Eternal Paradox | The Bianca Chronicles 1: The Sea is Yours

“Lunge, thrust, slash, spin,” she muttered to herself once again through heavy breath as a stinging drop of sweat dripped from her forehead down into a wildly beautiful green eye.

Bianca’s vision blurred for a moment with the sweat sting, but the death sentence was already pronounced on the poor straw-filled sackdummy Clara had crafted for the evening’s practice. Mercilessly slicing through the imaginary enemy, she completed her drill and golden straw showered all around, much of it sticking to her hair where it glistened in the setting island sun. The remains of the sack slipped slowly from the crosspoles Perkins had placed that morning.

With sabers at the ready, she stood heaving and snarling, almost wishing there was a flesh and blood enemy at the tips of her blades.

Where does it come from?

She had often wondered the same about her mysterious sense of violence and adventure. She refocused her eyes to look out, down the hill and over the marble cliffs, where the ocean waves crashed ruthlessly against the rocks below. Bianca wondered how many ships had run aground on those cliffs over the years. She herself had scoured the remains of shipwrecks several times in her sixteen years, and the only valuables she had ever found were her dual sabers. Still, it always seemed someone else was able to get there first, looting the best treasures and leaving nothing but soaked black powder and broken jars of pickled fish. Or maybe the treasures were taken by the sea. Mother always said the sea takes as much as it gives.

The sea is yours…

Why did she always feel this drive to the waters? Hers was not a family of adventurers or fishers. Mother was a cloakmaker and Bianca never knew her father. Mother would have none of Bianca’s swordplay. In fact, when she found her weapons at twelve, she had stashed them away in a secret cave for fear that Mother would make her sell them off. She found old Perkins some time after that snooping around her cave. “Show me what you got,” the old man had said with a twinkle in his eye, then parried her every thrust with his walking stick and a cackling laugh. From that day on, she had a friend in Perkins and another in his goodhearted wife, Clara.

For the last few years, Bianca had trained under the tutelage of the old couple. Clara showed her what berries were safe to eat, how to make fire, and the secrets of small game trapping that were handed down through generations of her family. Perkins taught her how to fight with unbridled fury. He taught her not to be afraid, and he taught her how to sail on his old fishing boat. Bianca always told herself Perkins had enlisted her help only because he was too old to man the riggings on his own, but with the way he constantly bested her in sparring matches with only a stick ensured that deep down she knew the truth: The old man loved her like a daughter.

“Y’already destroyed that one too?!” The merry cry came from behind, where Clara made her way carefully up the hill, assisted by her best hickory cane.

Turning over her shoulder and grinning slyly, Bianca called out in response, “The scallywag weren’t worth a wet weasel! Both women laughed.

“Might be next time I’ll fix a suit of chainmail, but I spect you’ll slash right through that’n as well,” Clara said with a warm smile and the hearty chuckle of a much younger woman. “C’mon down and wash up, Binky. Y’look like a scarecrow with all that straw in your hair. We don’t want yer Ma thinking you’ve been rolling in the hay with some boy!” This was a good point, Bianca thought, as the fact she had recently taken a keen interest in the opposite sex had not escaped her Mother’s attention.

After one more longing look toward the sea, Bianca sheathed her swords, then turned and walked the old woman down the hill toward the little cottage with smoke rising from its chimney. She treasured these little moments with Clara, who reminded Bianca of a grandmother she had never known. As red filled the sky and the sun slowly disappeared, Bianca began to smell the delicious stew that Perkins was stirring in that big black pot. Perkins made a mean stew, and Bianca was famished from practice.

When they entered, Perkins was sitting on the edge of his leather chair, facing the door with a strangely sober look on his wrinkled face. After a pause that seemed to suck the air from the room, he suddenly barked, “When do we fight, Bianca?”

Her response came without delay: “When the night is darkest.”

“Aye,” said Perkins. “When do we run?”

“When the fight ain’t ready for us,” said Bianca, who was starting to feel like she had done something wrong.

“Good girl.” The tension dissipated and the three settled down to eat as the red sky turned into a moonless and hazy black.

The sea is yours…

An hour later with a half full stomach (politely leaving some room for Mother’s porridge and crispy bacon) and a head full of curiosities, Bianca strolled down the path toward the little village. She didn’t need to make excuses about spending time with Perkins and Clara; Mother liked the couple and figured her daughter was some kind of do-gooder. She probably even bragged about it to her younger widowed friends. Mother didn’t really have any married friends, as is so often the way for those who have embraced single life.

Down the hill in the dark, Bianca heard a commotion and saw torchlights… angry torchlights.

Marauders. Or thieves. Or collectors.

Quieting her mind, Bianca crouched and waited as the small mob approached. She heard their boisterous voices long before she smelled the rum and gunpowder they carried, but each of these pieces convinced her of a single undeniable fact: This was a band of pirates.

Suddenly chilled to her core, Bianca froze as some twenty armed ruffians marched past. Thankfully she was not noticed, but she then realized with terror that they could only be approaching the little cottage from whence she came.

The Power of Mercenaries

The Power of Mercenaries

Today we’ll break down how you can upgrade your Mercenaries as they battle in your name across Elysium.

Last week we discussed how Mercenaries aid in your battles throughout Elysium. Now that we’ve covered some of the basics about what your Mercenaries do for you in Eternal Paradox, you can see how critical they are in your battle for conquest.

Your Mercenaries can often mean the difference between glory and defeat. How can you make sure that you have the best of the best as your trusted allies? Today, we’ll dive into all the ways that you can upgrade and train your Mercenaries to hone your fighting force into exactly what you need them to be.

Training Your Elite

Your Mercenaries influence the gameplay throughout all of Eternal Paradox. Growing and developing their abilities over time will be absolutely essential to triumph in battle.

The stats of your Mercenaries directly affect their capabilities. The Leadership stat , for instance, will allow a Mercenary to command more units in field battles as it rises. This would mean a larger fighting force in any of the many battlefields across Elysium.

Beyond their important role as field commanders, battles in Adventure mode are turn-based — fought entirely by your team of Mercenaries. Clearing higher waves of these battles will bring greater glory and rewards, but you’ll need strong Mercenaries and clever gameplay to get there.

When players clash in the Arena, it will be your Mercenaries doing the fighting. This asynchronous PvP will follow the same combat system as Adventure mode. Your Mercenaries will face off against your opponent’s, and the teams that triumph will climb the leaderboards.

Whenever you gain resources in the field as a Mercenary, they will gather silver points in their pouch for the day based on the amount of resources obtained. More powerful Mercenaries can take on more formidable threats, which can potentially mean more silver points in their pouch each day.

How to Upgrade Your Mercenaries

Mercenaries improve their skills in more than one way as you play with them. You can choose how to prioritize your training to develop their abilities, but all of the factors listed below are avenues to a boost in Mercenary power.

Level

Mercenary experience can be gained by hunting monsters or from event rewards. Using this experience, you can level up each of your Mercenaries. Each level, their innate abilities like HP, Attack, Defense, Speed and Leadership will increase.

Equipment

Each Mercenary has six equipment slots. You can obtain gear throughout various activities in Eternal Paradox, but you can also craft powerful equipment from materials you find in the field.

Each piece of equipment has stats and bonuses specific to that slot. Finding and creating more powerful gear and choosing how to combine the right bonuses for your playstyle refines your Mercenaries talents, so they are the most effective they can be.

Some equipment you’ll come across will be part of a larger set. These equipment sets will give a larger bonus for having all six pieces equipped.

Skills

Each Mercenary has a unique set of skills that are divided into two categories: Mercenary Skills and Field Battle Skills. Mercenary Skills are that warrior’s distinct actions in the turn based combat of Adventure mode or Arena battles. Field Battle Skills aid in battles where your Mercenary stands command of an army in the field.

Each skill levels by fulfilling several requirements, including collecting a set amount of a specific resource per level of that skill. The maximum level of any skill is eight. Since each Mercenary’s set of skills is unique, as these skills level higher they will specialize more and more into their specific area of strength to stand out amongst the pack.

Awakening

Awakening allows your Mercenary to learn additional skills and also increases their base stats. Awakening has three stages for any Mercenary:

  • Stage 1: Obtain an additional stat buff and unlock your Mercenary’s third skill
  • Stage 2: Obtain an additional stat buff and unlock theLeader Skill for your Mercenary
  • Stage 3: Obtain three additional stat buffs

Each time you Awaken a particular Mercenary, you’ll be required to spend more powerful Awakening Stones that can be found in exploration sites in the field.

Rank

A Mercenary’s Rank can be anywhere from one to six, and is increased using Mercenary Essence, which can occasionally be found while hunting monsters or during events.

Every rank a Mercenary gains will increase the number of stars displayed in their portrait, as well as increasing their base stats like Leadership, Attack Power, and Stamina.

Immortal Stats

Immortality is the final way that you can upgrade your Mercenaries that we’ll dive into today, but it is likely the most sought after. Unlike the previous methods, Immortality isn’t subject to the whims of the broken timeline each time the Ring of Ruin resets the conflict. Immortal Stats your Mercenaries gain will never reset, and will give them a permanent boost in every repeat of the eternal cycle.

Immortal Stats can be gained slowly as you accumulate experience with nearly any activity in Eternal Paradox. Buffs provided by Immortal Stats can vary greatly, but stacking these up can provide your Mercenaries the upper hand each time the cycle repeats.

Specialize and Customize

How you approach the continued upgrades to your Mercenaries will dictate how you specialize and what types of gameplay your commanders are best suited to. If you want to focus on a certain type of gameplay, you can concentrate on growing the power of the ideal Mercenaries for that. A well rounded team, however, will be necessary to some degree to dominate the battlefield. Don’t work so hard on your strengths you forget your weaknesses.

Each Mercenary has an inherent Attribute: Water, Fire, Wind, Light or Darkness. Each of these indicate certain strengths and weaknesses against opposing monsters or Mercenaries depending on their Attribute. This makes the choice of who to upgrade and what talents to focus on much more strategic, since you’ll want some variety in the types of Mercenaries you rely on.

While most Mercenary skills and abilities are useful in multiple forms of gameplay, some choices are clearly better suited to certain niches. Upgrading Mercenaries that shine in the areas you play most could be your best chance to beat the competition.

  • Adventure Mode: AoE skills or attacks that exploit the weaknesses of boss monsters will be extremely advantageous to surviving wave after wave in turn based battles
  • Hunting Monsters: Mercenaries with strong Leadership and strong Field Battle Skills will excel at hunting enemies in the field.
  • Field PvP: When fighting enemy troops, high damage and high leadership Mercenaries will serve you best.
  • Arena PvP: High attack speed is often essential to deliver the first strike. Mercenaries with HP recovery, resurrection or the ability to debuff enemies will be especially effective.

No matter what you’re specializing in, you can’t really make wrong choices. Improving any Mercenary can help you in your battles, as different Mercenaries can be more effective in different parts of the game. Allies with a variety of specialties and strengths may be your safest route to a well rounded conquest strategy. Due to the cyclical nature of time in Eternal Paradox, every few months you can try out new strategies and see what is most effective!

The Power of Command

Mercenaries serve you in nearly every aspect of Eternal Paradox. Along with improving your Castle, training and upgrading your Mercenaries is your clear path to consolidating your efforts in Elysium and achieving true power!

Your influence in Elysium is only as good as the Mercenaries who execute your will across the land. How will you choose to upgrade your commanders?

The Mercenaries of Eternal Paradox

The Mercenaries of Eternal Paradox

Learn about Elysium’s Mercenaries — your trusted commanders and allies.

In Eternal Paradox, you need your Mercenary allies by your side. Mercenaries are the ones who execute the will of your castle across Elysium. You’ll use your Mercenaries to explore and gather resources, battle dangerous monsters or other players, and reinforce your allies in epic battles for conquest and glory!

Mercenaries are key to the gameplay of Eternal Paradox in many ways. In the article below, we’ll try to cover the basics of what Mercenaries can do throughout Elysium.

The Elite of Elysium

In Eternal Paradox, the world is entrenched in conflict as the eternal cycle continues, repeating each time the Ring of Ruin stops. You are but one of many challengers seeking to seize fame, fortune and ultimate power from this world. Your Mercenaries are your agents across the land — battling and exploring to expand the reach and glory of your Castle.

Mercenaries perform many actions in Eternal Paradox, and a player can have many Mercenaries they control. Some Mercenary tasks such as adventure mode or arena battles are accessed through the castle, where you can access and manage the buildings within your walls.

Other actions require your Mercenaries to venture out of your castle and into the wild world of Elysium. These field tasks will require your Mercenaries to actually travel to the location you intend to have them explore, defend or conquer.

Players can potentially earn rewards while using eligible Mercenaries in Eternal Paradox. Each Mercenary carries a silver pouch which can be filled with silver points. These points are added to your Mercenary’s pouch based on the resources you collect during any actions you’ve taken throughout a given day using that Mercenary. Every eligible Mercenary’s silver point total is then compared to the total amount of silver points across all eligible Mercenaries that day to determine its portion of the daily rewards distribution.

Each Mercenary carries their own silver pouch in the game, not shared with other Mercenaries that you may control. Pouches only hold so much though! Individual Mercenaries will each have a set maximum amount of silver points that their pouch can store per day.

Adventure Awaits

Your Mercenaries represent you on the field of battle, but not every battlefield is the same. During each cycle of Eternal Paradox, your Mercenaries can fight their way through the campaign in Adventure Mode. These turn-based battles will match your Mercenaries against increasing difficulties of enemies.

Which four Mercenaries you choose for this adventure is an important choice, but clever strategy and planning will always be critical to get the most out of your team. As you advance through each stage of adventure mode, your potential rewards increase. How high will your team advance before the eternal cycle repeats?

Enter the Arena

In the Arena you can also utilize turn-based tactics to push your Mercenaries to victory. This is where you’ll directly square off against other players in Mercenary team battles. Every two weeks brings a new season in the arena, and players will be matched against opponents who have similar scores as they climb the leaderboard.

While Arena battling is turn-based, unlike Adventure Mode, it’s also asynchronous. This means rather than needing to be present when challenged by another team, each player will select a defensive roster of four Mercenaries that will defend them from attackers. When you challenge a team, your four chosen Mercenaries will face their defenders. This makes it important that you choose a Mercenary team whose abilities synergize well with each other and is ready for a wide variety of threats.

With each Arena battle, the winning player receives points that can be saved up and spent on various items. At the end of each season, the highest ranked players can receive larger rewards based on how they performed throughout the two weeks of Arena battling.

Vanquish Your Foes and Secure Resources

While Adventure Mode and the Arena are both ways to play Eternal Paradox that are accessed through your castle, there’s also important business for your Mercenaries beyond the protection of your walls. Outside your gates await dangerous enemies, valuable resources and opposing conquerors.

Each of your Mercenaries can lead soldiers into the field. Choosing an enemy to attack will consume action points for that leader and move your troops towards your target. Once you reach them, the battle begins. Each field battle triggers the auto-battle and the result is determined based on a simulation of combat — meaning the training and growth of your Mercenary and soldiers are essential for victory.

By defeating enemies on the map, you’ll find the resources you need to upgrade your castle buildings. You can also loot materials that you’ll need for equipment as well.

Hunting down foes isn’t the only way to collect the resources you’ll need to become an unstoppable force on Elysium. Your troops can also be sent out to collect resources from various farms, mines or other production landmarks. This doesn’t require action points, but your troops will need to spend some time at the location collecting the resource before returning to the castle.

Watch out though, while you’re collecting a resource you may be vulnerable to attack! Likewise, you can engage troops controlled by other players in the field.

Rally Your Guild

You may find that some threats can’t be handled on your own, and that’s when it helps to have a team you can rely on standing by you. Guilds are communities of many castles and players, all working together towards a common goal. There will be battles that you couldn’t possibly win on your own, and your guild can help you overcome those challenges.

If you encounter an enemy in the field that is too threatening for you, you can rally your guild to arms against your opponent. The player who calls for aid becomes the rally leader, and allied guildmates can send troops to assist them in combat. This can be used against opposing players, but can also be used to defeat powerful monsters or fight to occupy powerful locations — such as the Ring of Ruin.

The ultimate battle in Elysium always takes place at the Ring of Ruin, and many Mercenaries will have to fight side by side to control the mysterious power locked within. Guilds compete with each other for glory throughout the cycle of the game, but the greatest honors are bestowed on those who conquer the Ring of Ruin.

Various activities throughout Eternal Paradox will contribute to the prestige of your guild. Players can potentially earn guild rewards each week according to their individual efforts to support the guild.

Knowledge: The First Step to Victory

We’ve only very briefly discussed some of the many actions your Mercenaries perform in the world of Elysium, but hopefully the role they play in your conquests is a little more clear. Eternal Paradox features deep and complex gameplay, and your Mercenaries are an integral part in executing a winning strategy.

Now that you’re familiar with some of what Mercenaries can do, look for another update from us soon that will give you some insight on how you can make them even stronger. Knowing your Mercenaries is the first step towards conquering the Ring of Ruin and seizing power over time itself!
